Refugee Workshops at Kendal Torchlight Carnival

Kendal Torchlight has always been a beacon of community spirit and creativity. This year, the event takes on a special significance as it embraces the stories and talents of refugees through a series of unique workshops. These workshops, focused on creating bird lanterns, not only highlighting the national birds of various countries but also serve as a poignant reminder of the diverse backgrounds and rich cultures that refugees bring to our community.

Crafting Bird Lanterns: A Symbol of Hope and Heritage

In the lead-up to torchlight, refugees from different parts of the world have come together to participate in lantern-making workshops here in Cumbria. Each participant helped to create bird lantern that represents the national birds of their home countries. These lanterns are more than just beautiful decorations; they are symbols of hope, resilience, and the enduring connection to their homeland.

For many refugees, the act of crafting these lanterns is deeply personal. It allows them to share a piece of their heritage with the wider community, fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion. The bird lanterns, with their vibrant colours and intricate designs, tell stories of journeys, struggles, and triumphs.

Highlighting Home Countries and Personal Stories

The workshops have provided a platform for refugees to share their stories and the significance of their national birds.

These personal stories add a rich layer of meaning to the carnival, highlighting the diverse tapestry of experiences that make up our community. The bird lanterns will be displayed prominently during the procession, so keep a lookout for those!

The Importance of Inclusion

Being included in the Kendal Torchlight Carnival means a great deal to the refugee participants. It is an acknowledgment of their presence and contributions to the community. For many, it is a rare opportunity to celebrate their culture and share it with others in a joyful and supportive environment.

A Community United

Kendal Torchlight, with its long-standing tradition of bringing people together, is the perfect setting for this celebration of diversity. The inclusion of refugee workshops not only enriches the event but also sends a powerful message of unity and acceptance. As the bird lanterns light up the night, they will serve as a reminder that our community is stronger and more vibrant when we embrace and celebrate our differences.

Join us at Kendal Torchlight on September the 28th to witness this beautiful display of creativity, culture, and community spirit. Let’s come together to celebrate the stories and talents of our refugee friends and neighbours, and make this year’s carnival a truly unforgettable experience.
