Help us raise funds for by donating £1

For over half a century, the Kendal Torchlight has been a beacon of celebration, creativity, and community spirit. This beloved tradition has weathered many storms, including the recent challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, after a tough hiatus, the town centre procession returned, lighting up the streets of Kendal with renewed vigour and hope. The event is scheduled to happen this year on September 28th but after a funding blow, the event has been put in danger we have put out a plea to the community to help raise the remaining funds to secure the event.

The Kendal Torchlight is more than just a procession; it is a celebration of community’s resilience and creativity. From the vibrant lanterns crafted by local schools and community groups to the mesmerising performances by dancers and musicians, every aspect of the Torchlight reflects the heart and soul of Kendal. Last year’s event was a testament to the popularity of the event as thousands lined the streets to welcome it’s return with the Street Festival, Procession and a surprise grand finale drone show.

Chair Craig Pearson said “Every year the funding challenges get greater, and it becomes harder to recruit volunteers. Alongside the increased costs, it has becomes increasingly challenging. The whole event is organise by a group of 6 unpaid volunteers who juggle this alongside their family and work lives. We really need Kendal to get behind the event and help us to make it happen. We have a shortfall of £10,000 that we need to raise. If everyone who comes to Torchlight were able to donate even just £1, then we would easily smash that target. As of the end of July we have just £180 towards this target which is disheartening. Torchlight has always been a community tradition that is owned by Kendal and makes it special. Its something that generations have enjoyed and we want that to continue. Imagine a Kendal without the Torchlight – This is a reality we must strive to avoid. By donating, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, you can make a difference.”

Over the years, the Kendal Torchlight has evolved significantly. In the 1980s, it rebranded as the Torchlight Carnival to reflect its festive nature. By 2019, in recognition of its 50th anniversary, it adopted the name Kendal Torchlight Gathering, highlighting its role as more than just a carnival but a true community event.

From May this year, lantern and costume workshops have been held in schools, care homes, community groups and public venues so that everyone can get involved. The event has remained completely free and accessible so that anyone can come along and participate or watch the event. This year already, groups from Summer Hill Care Home, Heron Hill School, Vicarage Park School, Sandylands School and Fair Oak Housing, Life Steps, Hub Club, Sandgate School and Queen Katherine School.

Organising such a huge event requires immense effort and resources. The dedicated team of volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes are now at a crossroads. With fewer hands-on deck and rising costs, the future of the Kendal Torchlight hangs in the balance. We need more volunteers, more entries, and most importantly, more support from our local community.

The Kendal Torchlight remains a testament to the town’s resilience and creativity, drawing thousands of spectators and participants each year. It is a cherished tradition that embodies the spirit of Kendal and its people.

Every contribution, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to keeping the Torchlight alive. Join us in this mission to preserve the magic and spirit of Kendal Torchlight.
