Kendal Torchlight Carnival is delighted to announce its 2026 theme: Folklore & Fantasy – inviting the community to step into a world of myth, magic and imagination.
Taking inspiration from traditional tales, local legends and fantastical worlds, this year’s Carnival will transform Kendal into an enchanting landscape filled with glowing creatures, mysterious characters and spellbinding performances. From ancient folklore to modern fantasy, the theme offers endless creative possibilities for participants of all ages.
Organisers are encouraging schools, community groups, families and individuals to start imagining how they might bring the theme to life. Think woodland spirits, dragons, fairies, witches, giants, mythical beasts, enchanted forests or characters inspired by local Cumbrian folklore. Lanterns, costumes and performances can draw from both traditional storytelling and contemporary fantasy worlds.
As always, Kendal Torchlight Carnival will be supported by a programme of artist-led workshops, helping participants design and create their own lanterns, costumes and installations. Whether you’re a seasoned maker or trying something new for the first time, there will be opportunities to get involved in a fun, welcoming and inclusive environment.
The Torchlight Parade will once again be a magical, illuminated procession through the town, showcasing the creativity of the community and bringing thousands of people together for a shared celebration.
Organisers are also keen to see imaginative interpretations of the theme, including:
- Illuminated mythical creatures such as Phoenixes, Unicorns and Sea Serpents.
- Folklore-inspired characters from different cultures
- Fantasy worlds and storytelling scenes
- Nature-inspired spirits and guardians of the land
- Interactive or moving lantern sculptures
- Dance Groups, costumes and music
- Push along vehicles and floats
Kendal Torchlight Carnival continues to be a free, community-led event, celebrating creativity, community and diversity. Following the success of recent years, the 2026 event promises to be one of the most imaginative yet.
